Alienware Aurora – 2023
As leaders in the high-end gaming market, Alienware is constantly evolving the gold standard of performance and design. We’ve had the pleasure of helping with that development through the years, recently with their Legend 2.0 Design Language desktop. For 2023, we worked once again with the design leaders at Alienware to create their flagship desktop for Legend 3.0. This refined vision of the Legend language features several of the core iconic elements of the previous generation, but is in many ways a departure from earlier iterations. Our primary challenge was to refresh the language to meet several aesthetic and technical goals while preserving the language DNA.
As functional art, Alienware computers are as much an expression of engineering prowess as they are of aspirational aesthetics. From early development of Legend 3.0 product concepts, we worked closely with Dell engineers to evaluate the suitability of concepts using a host of criteria. These included component layout, airflow, manufacturing, and production assembly. Pushing the boundaries of performance requires a reliable chassis that can deliver substantial cooling. The new design expresses that airflow visually through form and delivers it in volume where it matters most.
The gaming landscape moves at a rapid pace, and a series of developments can cascade into paradigm shifts of how we relate to our devices. Smaller, more powerful components have lead to smaller chassis. This affords the opportunity to proudly display desktops on the desk where they belong, instead of relegating them to the floor. For Legend 3.0, we sought a design that communicated refined confidence within a compact envelope. This smaller size gives space back to the desk and gives gamers the freedom to rotate the design 90 degrees to face the component window front and center. With fewer elements comprising the shell, more attention can be paid to each. The result is a sleek performance tool with premium fit and finish.
As a leader in its class, the new design brings classiness to its expression of power. We distilled the design into its raw elements: airflow, and the illuminated Stadium shape. The understated design is as at home in a high-end home environment as it is in an eSports arena.

Simplicity can make a powerful statement. The Legend 3.0 Aurora sheds all excess to become a bold and totemic expression of refinement for a new era.
