Delta Development TBS Blood Transportation System — 2023

We worked with the Delta Development Engineering Team to refine the enclosure for their unique blood transportation system. The device reliably keeps vital blood supplies at stable cold conditions for military and emergency service use in the most challenging of environments. We defined a cohesive rugged aesthetic with functional features conforming to exacting military standards. We worked closely with Delta to support mechanical and thermal requirements, improve human factors and ergonomics, and facilitate manufacturability.

Thick rubber corner bumpers protect the enclosure during rough handling. These bumpers stand the unit off the ground and are also the contact points that keep stacked units aligned with each other. Concealed wheels on the bottom back edge allow for movement across smooth ground like concrete or tarmac. A single person can transport the unit in such environments using the long luggage-style handle that extends out from the bottom front edge. For more rugged terrain, four handles that rotate out from the top edge allow for multiple-person carrying.

Inside, cold air circulates throughout the storage chamber. Contents must stay organized, easily accessible, and evenly temperature regulated. Delta Development conceived of a basket system with channels for airflow. We helped refine the system by drafting the baskets for injection molding while also ensuring the geometry would stack on top of itself. A drafted shape that stacks on top of itself is often a difficult design challenge for large plastic parts due to the inherently nesting nature of tapered shapes. We also designed handles that store within the the sides of the basket that did not interfere with Delta’s airflow specification.

We also helped to visualize the product as it moves through logistics facilities and is used in the field. These visualizations aided in raising investor interest, funding further development.

Finally, we created renders depicting the device as it moves through logistics facilities and is used in the field. These visualizations aided in raising investor interest and additional project funding.
